The Tarot Caster's Guide
of Amulets by Merlin
The Tarot is a collection of images. Each image represents various relationships between the force and gravity of nature, experience and perception. Several cultures contributed to its origins, thus the lore behind the Tarot is vast. Most stories about life are represented in the Tarot because it represents the full range of human experience and the lessons we may derive from such experiences. Everything from discovering the heat from a stove to exploring why some relationships go bad can be found in the Tarot, which encompasses every aspect of human experience.
The Tarot is a matter of interpretation. Archetypes may be found in the paintings and stories. A student of the Tarot discovers that one is in a never-ending academy, forever attending lessons and seminars of human nature and culture.
For my own studies, I felt that to truly understand the Tarot, I should create a deck of my own. I began the drafts to what I thought would become paintings. However, they manifested as contained images. I discovered that they would serve better as sculpture, something that could be worn as a talisman: a point of focus in one’s life, a reminder of a virtue or practice. A reminder of the Truth.
I found by simply dropping them and observing the pattern of their fall, I could see images in the spread. I like to think of this process as “Casting the Tarot” as one would cast a net: “fishing” for insight.
